A Brazilian man has been critically injured by police firing shots during an eviction that turned violent when skirmishes broke out and vehicles were set alight.

In the second day of forced evictions, police invaded the Pinheirinho shanty town in Sao José dos Campos, a city around 80km from Sao Paulo, knocking down makeshift houses and forcing many from their homes.

Up to 2,000 of the people left homeless are sheltering in a local church.
